Carolina Traveler: Who owns it… Pt 2

The problem I have with WCNC is it thinks of Carolina Traveler as product. A product it sold once and customers bought once and that’s over. I think what the leadership at WCNC is missing is that CT is something they don’t actually own… you do. The first time I considered CT airing again it bothered me. I was annoyed. I slept on it and realized it’s not mine either. It never was. CT was not the standard issue news product. Air it once and move on. These are stories about you. About who we are as humans, Americans and Carolinians. The show was about what gives the Carolinas its soul… you.

Even though we frequently did stories about railways or islands or mountains or small towns or horses or dogs or birds CT was alway about you. It was the secret to its popularity. Every story was a peak through someone else’s eyes. And therefore a peak inside of each person watching. We are all more alike than different. We did a show in Italy with people who didn’t even speak English. What did we learn? They are us. I swear Andy Benton and I could travel to Iran and do a show and we would discover that Iranians are exactly like us. You approach people with a stick and you’ll find as many differences as you want. You approach people with an open hand and a hug and you’ll learn our differences are invented by religion and politics… not God or our souls.

No matter where we went, Carolina Traveler was about everything we all celebrate as good and important. From the nuttiest goofball to the most heart wrenching of life’s circumstance, Carolina Traveler touched us all in a way no other news products ever could.

If they have any sense at all at WCNC they’d get it back on air again or at the very least package it into DVD sets and let you buy them. I realize 70-plus shows is three full season’s worth… but you could buy them over time. They’d make great Christmas gifts!

Would it make WCNC money? No clue. It certainly isn’t costing them anything anymore to make them. They’re paid for. Just sell it now! It’s going to take someone over there to get out of the box and think differently. Or maybe just think of you first. Admittedly TV stations are not great at that. We spend all day in a box. We invented the box. We broadcast our shows to you in a box. We are the box.

I’m not sure if a campaign to show WCNC how much you want your show back would work. I think it will only take one smart person in a position of power there to flip a switch and re-air Carolina Traveler. Here’s to hoping they get that done for you.

You fellow traveler… MR

….and this is why I followed you when you left and why I am still around now. Hard to believe it’s been almost a year!

I sure hope the people at WCNC wise up and make the CT available in some form or fashion.

Another random question… (are you tired of these yet?)… do you still keep in touch with the Gourd Lady?

I’d buy the CT DVD set (after the Lost set, of course…)

I’d buy the DVD’s! I miss Carolina Traveler. Thank God (and Anna) for your blog! At least we don’t have to do without you completely, but I would love to have all your CT shows to watch. I have googled and found some of them, but not enough. Even though I’m not fond of the idea that the profit would go to them, I think I’ll email WCNC right now! Would they have to pay you royalties if they sell the DVD’s?

I cannot find an email address which would go directly to station management. But you could use this one and ask to get the CT videos up for sale with proceeds going to a charity. And you can ask that the email be directed to the correct person/department at the station. OK SASTP readers lets all send at least one email. Ask all your friends to do the same.

I’d buy them too. CT is where I came to see you and Andy as part of my family, so it would almost be like looking at old family photo albums, just on video! Like Shirley H, tho, I wish there was some way to have you and Andy “share in the wealth” if they ever did sell the DVD’s. We gotta look out for our family!
